New Jersey Man Dies After House Catches Fire

April 17, 2018

Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services responded to a house fire this past Saturday night at 268 North Briar Ridge located off Bells Ferry Road near Towne Lake.

Cherokee County 911 received the call around midnight and dispatched fire units to the scene. Engine 20 was the first unit on scene and reported that the house was 40% involved. The residents of the home included an 82 year old man and his 74 year old wife and a five year old child. Another elderly couple, who were traveling back to New Jersey after a stay in Florida, stopped at the home to visit and spend the night.

According to a family member, her mom woke up to see a bright light and then the smoke alarms went off. She immediately woke everyone up and told them to get out of the house. The mom was taken by ambulance to Kennestone Hospital and her husband was taken to the Burn Unit at West Cobb Hospital. The visiting couple was also transported to an area hospital, however, the 76 year old man later died from heart failure. His wife has since been released from Kennestone Hospital and was planning to fly back to New Jersey. The 5 year old child did not receive any injuries and was not transported to a hospital.

Cherokee County Fire Investigators went back to the home today to continue to investigate a cause of the fire.
