Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services received a call this afternoon at approximately 12:45 reporting a transfer truck had flipped over on the bridge at Lower Bethany Road resulting in logs being dropped below onto the north and southbound lanes of I-575.
Cherokee County Firefighters arrived on scene to find logs blocking the roadway and a black Honda Fit automobile that had been struck by the falling logs. The vehicle was traveling southbound when it was struck. Fortunately, the male driver and two female passengers only received minor injuries. They were taken by ambulance to Northside Cherokee Hospital to be evaluated. Firefighters also reported that the truck was on fire when they arrived on scene, but were able to put it out very quickly. The driver of the truck appeared to be OK.
A tree service, which was near when the accident occurred, was able to help emergency service personnel in removing the trees from the roadways. The southbound lane of I-575 was reopened around 1:45 this afternoon. Logs were still hanging over the side of the northbound lanes as emergency workers continued to get the truck up righted and the trees safely removed from the bridge.
Members with the Georgia State Patrol, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Canton Police Department also responded to assist with the call. No other injuries were reported.
