Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services responded to a structure fire call early this morning, at approximately 3:30, at 2497 Land Road in the Clayton community.
Cherokee County 911 received a call from the homeowner stating that his house was on fire and he was trying to get the dogs out of the house. Dispatchers reported that they could hear the man coughing as he was trying to get the dogs out of the house. The caller also stated that they house was beginning to fall in.
Firefighters on Engine 6 were the first to arrive on the scene to report that fifty percent of the home was involved with most of the fire coming from the back of the structure. The occupants of the home, John and Terri Lyon, both 48, were able to escape without injury. There were three dogs in the house at the time of the fire; however, one was confirmed dead.
According to Cherokee County Fire Investigator, Cheri Collett, the home was completely destroyed. Red Cross was also notified to assist the family and both lanes of Land Road were closed until the fire operation was complete.
