There is no doubt that firefighting can be one of the most physically demanding and dangerous jobs in the world. That’s why fire recruits are required to go through physical training while they are learning the skills of becoming a firefighter.
The newest group of recruits is ending their fifth week of training. According to Training Coordinator, Jim Laughlin, “These recruits really push hard. We push them and they ask for more.” The recruits are put through an extensive physical training program that includes doing push-ups, sit-ups and even a 2 mile run. “We do physical training every morning for one hour and after that we do skills and drills in gear to condition them to be able to work fires in their gear,” stated Laughlin.
Some of the recruits have already lost as much as 20 pounds due to the training. Laughlin said that this group is definitely ready. “They’re strong and they look good,” he added.
