Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services responded to a structure fire call this morning, at approximately 10:15, at 6571 Vaughn Road, in the Hickory Flat area.
Cherokee County 911 received a call from a passerby reporting heavy smoke coming from the one-story brick structure. Firefighters arrived minutes later to report flames coming out of the roof of the house. There was also some uncertainty regarding occupants being inside the house at that time. Several pets were inside the home and were able to escape, however, two dogs and a cat perished in the fire. It was later discovered that the residents of the house were not home when the fire occurred.
The American Red Cross was notified to assist a grandmother, a mother and her 14-year-old daughter who were living in the home at the time of the fire.
Both lanes of Vaughn Road were closed until the operation was complete. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
