The Cherokee County Local Utility Coordinating Committee is partnering with Georgia 811 and Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services to promote National Safe Digging Month during April.
“Thousands of times each year, the underground infrastructure in Georgia is damaged by those who do not have underground lines located prior to digging, resulting in service interruption, environmental damage and threat to public safety,” stated Cherokee County Fire Chief, Eddie Robinson.
National Safe Digging Month was designed to heighten contractor and homeowner awareness about the 811-notification system. By calling 811, Cherokee County contractors and homeowners notify area utility operators of their intent to dig so that the utilities can be located ahead of their projects. The 811-notification system is paramount to the prevention of damage to underground utilities and the safety of Cherokee County residents.
Chief Robinson informed Lori Jones, Co-Chair of the Cherokee County Local Utility Coordinating Committee and Georgia 811, that he will present a proclamation to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on April 19th to proclaim this month as Safe Digging Month in Cherokee County which will recognize the importance of calling 811 before digging.
