Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) has begun annual hydrant inspections throughout the county. CCFES inspects all the fire hydrants in the county each year to ensure that they function properly, are easily located, and accessible.

When testing fire hydrants to ensure they functions properly, sediment in the water mains can be disturbed. This can sometimes cause discoloration of the water in homes and business for a short period of time but does not pose a health risk. If discolored water is noticed at your tap, turn your cold water on and run it for a few minutes to see if it clears up. If this doesn’t correct the problem within five to ten minutes, please contact your water provider for additional guidance.

To ensure good visibility and accessibility of fire hydrants, a 3-foot clear space shall be maintained around the circumference of fire hydrants except as otherwise required or approved. This requirement applies year-round to ensure that firefighters can locate and access the closest hydrant in the event of an emergency.

Questions about fire hydrant access can be directed to the County Fire Marshal’s office at 678-493-6290.
