Members of Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) attended Fire Prevention Around the Farm Tuesday night, a community event hosted by the Cherokee County Fire Chief’s Foundation. The event was held at Horner & Nash DVM, P.C. in unincorporated Cherokee County near Canton.

At the event, members of CCFES presented information to citizens about how to create a safe environment for animals and humans inside barns, how to provide some level of safety for firefighters during a search and rescue operation inside a barn, and how to minimize loss of property from fire and other emergencies.

Cheri Collett, Division Chief of Intelligence spoke to attendees about past barn fires that have occurred in and around Cherokee County. She presented available information about the fire investigations surrounding some of those incidents and provided tips to reduce the chance of a fire occurring.

Chad Arp, Division Chief and Fire Marshal for CCFES discussed fire prevention, building codes, and local ordinances that are in place to reduce that opportunity for fires to occur and allow for occupants to escape in the event of a fire.

The CCFES Technical Large Animal Rescue (TLAR) Team was also in attendance at the event and provided demonstrations to show how firefighters can help rescue large animals from different types of emergencies.

Also in attendance was Megan Kraski, equine veterinarian at Horner and Nash DVM who discussed equine health and behavior during and after a barn fire. Mr. Billy Dowd, insurance agent representing American National, discussed the differences between types of insurance policies and the importance of having adequate coverage.

All structure fires are extremely dangerous to life and property and CCFES works diligently to educate and prevent emergencies throughout Cherokee County and beyond. Our members were honored to participate in this great event and hope that human and animal lives will be saved because of it.
