Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) quickly responded to a residential structure fire at a home on Upper Sweetwater Trail near Canton this morning. Firefighters extinguished the fire and successfully rescued a cat from the residence.

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structure fire at 10:24 a.m. Units from multiple stations responded and the first fire engine arrived on scene at 10:27 a.m. to find smoke and flames in the home. They worked aggressively to search the home for victims and deployed hoselines into the home. During the search, firefighters found a cat that had obviously inhaled smoke. Firefighter Corey Wester rescued the cat from the home and other firefighters, Dean Hege and Connor Bourn, began assessing the cat and treated it with oxygen. The cat’s owner advised that they would take the cat to their veterinarian for further evaluation at the recommendation of firefighters on-scene.

No human victims were found in the home. The fire was located in the basement and quickly extinguished.

Upper Sweetwater Trail was closed near Brookfield Ct. for approximately two hours due to fire hose in the roadway that was being used to obtain water from a fire hydrant.

Occupants of the home denied injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
