Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) is spreading awareness about fire safety this holiday season by participating in the Keep the Wreath Green campaign. From now until January 1, wreaths with green lights will be displayed throughout the county, with one green bulb replaced by a red bulb for every structure fire that occurs in Cherokee County during this period.

This initiative aims to highlight the importance of practicing fire prevention during the holiday season, a time when fire risks increase due to festive activities such as cooking, decorating, and the use of candles and fireplaces. In the spirit of the season, CCFES encourages the public to take extra precautions to prevent fires in their homes and communities.

“We want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday season,” said Fire Chief Eddie Robinson. “The Keep the Wreath Green campaign serves as a reminder that fire prevention is crucial during this time of year, especially with the added fire hazards around holiday decorations, cooking, and heating sources. Let’s work together to keep our community safe.”

Wreaths will be prominently displayed at various locations throughout Cherokee County, including fire stations, community centers, and other public places. CCFES encourages everyone to check out these wreaths and spread the word about fire safety practices.

In addition to the wreath campaign, CCFES offers the following holiday fire safety checklist to help keep families safe:

  • Water natural trees frequently to prevent dry needles from becoming a fire hazard or consider using an artificial tree.
  • Discard trees promptly after the holiday season.
  • Inspect holiday lights for exposed wires, frayed cords, loose connections, and broken sockets.
  • Never leave candles unattended and keep them away from flammable materials.
  • Store matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
  • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from other objects.
  • Ensure stockings are kept clear of open flames when using the fireplace.
  • Use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping.
  • Have your chimney inspected annually.
  • Maintain a 3-foot kid-free zone around the stove and oven.
  • Test smoke alarm batteries and replace them if needed.
  • Sleep with bedroom doors closed to slow the spread of fire.
  • Review your family fire escape plan and establish a meeting place outside.
  • Teach your guests your fire escape plan.
