Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services is excited to announce an important leadership transition within its Explorer program. Captain Michael Sims, who has dedicated 17 years to mentoring and guiding young future emergency responders, will be stepping down from his role as Lead Advisor. He will be succeeded by Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO) Brooke Ice, an experienced firefighter and former Explorer, who will take on the role of Lead Advisor.

Sims, who began his journey with the Explorer Post as a high school student, has led the program to extraordinary success over nearly two decades. Under his leadership, the Explorer Post has achieved numerous milestones, including dozens of first-place trophies at regional and state Explorer competitions, showcasing the talent and commitment of the young men and women in the program. More than 50 former Explorers have gone on to pursue careers in public safety, with nearly 30 of them joining the professional ranks of Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services. Sims has helped shape the careers of countless individuals, preparing them for meaningful work in emergency services and public safety.

FAO Ice, who also began her career as an Explorer, is poised to continue Sims' legacy. With a deep understanding of both the scouting and fire service fields, Ice brings a wealth of experience and passion to her new role. She is committed to maintaining the high standards set by Sims while introducing new ideas and initiatives to keep the program evolving and engaging for its members. Ice’s background in youth development and emergency services will be invaluable as she works to continue the program’s success and foster the next generation of emergency responders.

While Captain Sims will be stepping down from his day-to-day responsibilities, he will continue to support the program as the Committee Chair for the Explorer Post. In this role, Sims will oversee committee operations, ensuring that the program remains on track and thrives under Ice’s leadership. His passion for the success of the program is unwavering, and he looks forward to contributing in a new capacity.

“I am thrilled to welcome Brooke as the new Lead Advisor for our Explorer Post,” said Captain Sims. “She brings a unique combination of skills, experience, and dedication to the program. I have no doubt that she will build upon the foundation we have established and continue to provide opportunities for young people interested in pursuing careers in public safety. I’m excited to support her in this next chapter.”

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services extends its heartfelt gratitude to Captain Sims for his years of exemplary leadership and service to the Explorer Post, and welcomes Brooke Ice as the new Lead Advisor. The Explorer Post program continues to be an invaluable resource for young people who aspire to make a difference in their communities through careers in emergency services.
