Last week, Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) responded to and successfully extinguished four separate structure fires. While no serious injuries were reported, our thoughts are with the families who were impacted by these incidents. These unfortunate events serve as a reminder of the critical importance of fire safety, particularly during the festive season when homes are often adorned with decorations and holiday cheer.

As we celebrate this joyous time of year, it is essential to prioritize the safety of our loved ones. In light of these recent incidents, we wish to draw attention to our annual Keep the Wreath Green campaign, which aims to raise awareness about fire safety practices in our community. Our Red Bulb Count has now risen to eight, representing the number of structure fires that have occurred in December alone. Each red bulb symbolizes a structure fire incident, serving as a stark reminder that safety should be at the forefront of our holiday celebrations.

CCFES encourages all residents to take proactive measures to protect their homes and families. Here are some essential fire safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Check your smoke alarms: Ensure that smoke alarms are installed in every room and that they are functioning properly. Test alarms monthly and replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer.

  • Be cautious with decorations: When using holiday lights, inspect them for frayed wires or damage. Avoid overloading electrical outlets, and always turn off lights before leaving home or going to bed.

  • Practice safe cooking: Stay in the kitchen while cooking, especially when frying or grilling. Keep flammable items away from heat sources.

  • Create an escape plan: Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family. Make sure everyone knows how to exit the home quickly and safely in case of an emergency.

As we embark on this festive season, let us remember that fire safety is not just a priority during the holidays but should be a daily commitment throughout the year. Together, we can work to keep our community safe.
