Large Wood Pile Fire at Cowart Mulch

Ball Ground, GA — January 3, 2025

At approximately 6:00 AM Thursday, a large wood pile fire broke out at Cowart Mulch, located near Ball Ground Hwy. and East Cherokee Drive. The fire is still burning today and is expected to burn for an extended period as teams work to separate the pile and fully extinguish the blaze.

Due to the nature of the fire, significant smoke is being produced, affecting the immediate area and extending beyond. Motorists and residents are advised to use extreme caution when traveling through affected areas, as smoke conditions may settle near roadways and reduce visibility, especially during morning and evening hours.

Fire at Cowart Mulch - Day 4 Update

As of today, we are in day four of the ongoing fire at Cowart Mulch which is located in the area of Ball Ground Highway and East Cherokee Drive between Canton and Ball Ground. The fire is primarily burning raw wood and brush, and our crews, in partnership with facility staff, have successfully been working to reduce the risk of fire spread to structures and equipment on site and beyond. Facility personnel are using heavy equipment to separate the piles of material, which is helping to remove the fuel load from the fire.

Due to current weather conditions, smoke is settling in areas between Canton and Ball Ground and could affect surrounding areas. Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling through any areas with visible smoke, as it could present intermittent hazards. Slow down, turn on headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

Individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD should take extra care when smoke is present. It’s advisable to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut. If possible, use an air purifier to improve indoor air quality. If leaving the house is necessary, wearing an N95 mask can help minimize exposure to smoke.
