On the morning of May 14, 2025, Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) responded to reports of smoke at the Isotec International facility located on Longview Street in Canton. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an exothermic chemical reaction involving Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) and water that had ignited a fire inside a vessel on-site.
CCFES activated its Hazardous Materials Team and, in coordination with the Canton Police Department, Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee County E 9-1-1, Cherokee County Radio Technology, and the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, established a unified command to manage the response. A safety perimeter was established around the area and Longview Street was closed to through traffic between Goss Street and Golf Course Road.
Air quality in the surrounding area was continuously monitored by CCFES with the assistance of the Environmental Protection Division (EPD), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Civil Support Team. All readings indicated air quality remained safe for the public throughout the incident.
The fire was successfully contained and extinguished by late afternoon. One firefighter sustained minor injuries while working to control the fire and was treated and released from a local hospital. No civilian injuries or illnesses were reported.
Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services commends the swift, coordinated efforts of all responding agencies and remains committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community.
