Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services is currently on the scene of a residential structure fire on Hillcrest Lane near Hickory Flat Highway in Canton.
Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire showing from the porch, garage, and roof of the home. Crews conducted an aggressive interior search to ensure no occupants were inside and worked quickly to bring the fire under control. Thankfully, no injuries to civilians or firefighters have been reported.
Two dogs were rescued from the home by firefighters. One was transported to a local veterinarian for evaluation and treatment. Tragically, two birds found inside the home did not survive.
The residence was home to two adults and three children, all of whom are now displaced due to significant damage to the structure. The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the family with immediate needs.
As of 1930hrs on 5/20/25, fire crews remain on scene performing salvage and overhaul operations. Access to Hillcrest Lane is currently limited as emergency operations continue.
Cherokee County Fire investigators are on scene working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
UPDATE 5/21/25: Crews have cleared the scene. Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire originated near the wall separating the garage from the front porch. Additionally, we learned that one of the dogs rescued yesterday died around 2:00 a.m. this morning.
