Cherokee Fire responded to the scene of a hazardous materials incident at the Cherokee County Justice Center located at 90 N Street in Canton, Ga.

At approximately 1:20pm, Cherokee County E-911 received a smoke alarm activation and Engine 16 and Truck 9 were dispatched to the scene. The first arriving units located smoke in the building and started a full alarm. Members completed primary searches looking for both victims and fire. The building was evacuated with the help of our law enforcement partners. No fire was found.

Upon further investigation, a large refrigerant leak was located inside of the main A/C system for the building. A ruptured line, part of a 700lb system, created a hazardous film that coated all three floors. Cherokee County Fire Hazardous Materials Team was called into the scene and was able to successfully stop the refrigerant leak.

There is no active threat to the community, and no injuries have been reported. The scene is still active, and crews will remain on scene for an undetermined length of time. North Street in Downtown Canton was closed but has since reopened.
