Firefighters from across the region recently completed an intensive National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Swiftwater Rescue training course designed to prepare emergency responders for challenging water and flood-related emergencies.
The multi-day course combined classroom instruction with hands-on training focused on swiftwater hazards, firefighter safety, rescue techniques, rope systems, boat operations, and scene management. Participants practiced both individual and team-based rescue operations while emphasizing communication, risk assessment, and sound decision-making.
The NPQ certification provides a nationally recognized qualification demonstrating that firefighters have met established performance requirements for swiftwater rescue operations.
“This training ensures our firefighters are prepared to respond when our community needs us most,” department officials said. “The skills developed during this course can make a critical difference during a water rescue.”
The training also strengthened regional cooperation among participating fire departments and agencies. Continued investment in specialized training helps improve firefighter safety and enhances the ability of local responders to protect Cherokee County and surrounding communities during water emergencies.
