Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a structure fire at approximately 7:15 this evening at 312 Taylor Leigh Court, located in the Mountain Brooke North subdivision off Old Dawsonville Road, in Ball Ground.
According to reports, a neighbor, Chris Gray, heard a small “boom” and went outside to investigate when he noticed that his next door neighbor’s house was on fire. The neighbor told his wife, Theresa, to call 911 and go to the front door to see if the homeowners were inside while he grab a water hose. The neighbor stated that the fire was coming from the back corner of the house and was traveling up the eave. The homeowners, Larry Godfrey, age 73, and his wife, Nancy, age 66, were able to get out of the house without injury. The Godfreys also had a pet dog that was able to get out, too.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the two story structure. Firefighters began a defensive attack on the fire and also brought in a ladder truck to get high above the roof to spray water. The house received extensive damage and was gutted with portions of the roof burned off.
The Godfreys have been in the house for approximately 10 years. No additional injuries were reported and Cherokee County Fire Investigators are investigating a cause of the fire.
